Our Church History

Bedok Methodist Church was born on 21 October 1946 when a dozen members of the Geylang Straits Methodist Church, headed by Rev. Chew Hock Hin, held their first gospel service in an attap house chapel at Padang Terbakar. Thereafter, the gospel works began to function in the charge of Mr Chan Wah Teck, a local preacher who pastored the church for 36 years until 1982 when he officially stepped down. He continued to assist in shepherding the 5 pm congregation until his retirement.

In 1949, as the pioneering work expanded, the chapel was officially known as the Bedok Methodist Church. Plans to raise funds were made to build a small church on the main road. On 29 Sept 1952, the corner stone for the new church was laid by Rev. Chew, assisted by Pastor Chan Wah Teck. The building was completed at the end of 1952 and in the following year the church, situated at No.1 Lorong Pelasari, now known as No.86 Bedok Road, was dedicated by Bishop R.L. Archer.

In 1975, the sanctuary was enlarged to cope with the increase in membership. It was completed in August that year providing a seating capacity of 230. In 1983, Chan Wah Teck Hall was constructed to accommodate the Sunday school, the BMC kindergarten and the pastors' offices. As of 1995, the membership has increased to over 900 and it is still on the rise. To meet Bedok's membership growth and expanding ministry, the church embarked on a new development project to seat 600 worshippers. After the demolition of the old sanctuary, the construction of the new one began in mid 1993. In the meantime, the church held its Sunday morning services at Geylang Methodist Secondary with the kind permission of its principal while the 5 pm Sunday service continued to be held at Chan Wah Teck Hall. The building was completed and normal Sunday services resumed in the new sanctuary on 31 March 1996. This was the result of the generous and sacrificial giving of our faithful and dedicated members, friends and pastors.

The Children's Ministry continued to expand and there arose the need to rebuild the Chan Wah Teck Hall and increase its training facilities. In spite of the depressed economy during the building project, God provided and BMC members and friends gave generously. On 26 October 2003, Bishop Dr Robert Solomon dedicated the opening of the new Chan Wah Teck Hall which houses 2 large halls and 16 training rooms.

In 2005, the entire church embarked on the 40 Days of Purpose Spiritual Retreat. We renewed our commitment to run with the church vision, To Make Disciples For Jesus Christ, and to obey the five purposes of God: worship, fellowship, discipleship, ministry and evangelism. In 2006, the Year of Equipping, we made a concerted effort as a body of Christ to learn more about God's word. We also celebrated BMC's 60th anniversary, which stretched over three months. We had three special services, Celebrating 60 Years of Children, Youth and Seniors. We also put up the History Tunnel, a month-long church history exhibition which generated much interest. The celebrations culminated in a grand church service and dinner at Downtown East on 22 October. We look back and thank God for 60 years of goodness and faithfulness.

2007 was the Year of Missions where members were invited to go on mission with God. The church did a corporate study of missions together. We were also equipped through a missions conference, training seminars and workshops. By the end of 2007, about 500 people or 50% of the church went out to the mission field to do God's work - mainly in Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Cambodia, Japan, Nepal, Hong Kong and Israel. Some of us went out together as a care group while others went as interest or ministry groups. We have truly been awed by what God is doing all around the world.

This year, we embark on the Year of Worship and Prayer. Just as much as we continue to serve God wherever we are, we also look forward to a year of rest and intimacy with Him. We look forward to pursuing a deeper life of worship and prayer, and moving in a greater knowledge of and obedience to our Lord Jesus Christ.
