Ordinary
People, Extraordinary God
Scripture Text: Matthew
4: 18-22
We
hear of missionaries doing great works and sometimes wonder if
they have that something extra that we do not have. The good news
is that these people are ordinary people but God was able to use
them because they were willing and available (1 Cor 1:27). Thus
we are ordinary people, but we have an extraordinary God. By ourselves,
we can do nothing, but with God nothing is impossible.
1)
Ordinary Fishermen are called to minister
The first disciples Jesus called were not learned men by simple
fishermen. We find that fishermen have certain qualities. They
are patient and have perseverance. They do not easily give up.
God is looking for ordinary people whom He can invest. He can
use the skilled as well as the unskilled, but He needs our willingness
to serve Him.
2)
Ordinary Fishermen show a mark of Obedience
We find that when Jesus called Simon Peter, Andrew and the sons
of Zebedee, they left everything and followed Him immediately.
They did not hesitate. God loves obedience rather than sacrifice
(1 Samuel 15:22). They obeyed immediately. We find that God loves
obedience.
3)
Ordinary Fishermen forsook all to follow Christ
The fishermen forsook all to follow Christ. Instead of catching
fish, they became ‘fishers of men’. Rescuing people
are the greater concern of the church. Do we have a passion for
Christ? Are we willing to become witnesses for Christ? Do we have
the heart to love many?
Prayer
Response:
Dear Lord Jesus, I pray that I will be available to do the work
you want me to do. May I persevere and be obedient. May my eyes
will be focused on you and you alone and not depart from the path
you set me on. I pray that I will have the boldness to witness
for you and win many for Christ. Amen
