Devotional for the week – 23 November 2009 Sermon Title: Come Grow Old With Me Introduction How do you consider yourself as you grow old? Some consider old age to be the ‘sunset years’ of their lives. Sunset years can be defined as a time of becoming, a time of growth and maturity. The attitude we adopt during our sunset years is important: if we consider ourselves as being old, we will feel old. On the other hand, if we see ourselves as helpful, it will give us new meaning in life. It would also give us time to reflect on all our experiences and blessings and be grateful to God. Aging Problems As we age, we may increasingly need to cope with crises in our lives. We may face health problems which may slow down our activity. It may be a time of loneliness, especially when our children are all grown up and have families of their own. There are also myths of aging we have to contend with. Some people have the tendency to think that when one grows old, one may turn senile and would land up in a nursing home. We must change this way of thinking as there are benefits of becoming old. Benefits of Aging The psalmist says: “I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread.” (Psalm 37:25) The psalmist points out that there is no lack in his lifetime. He witnesses a faithful God at work. Similarly, we can adopt a godly view of life. Aging can be a time of great usefulness. With years of experience behind us, those of us who are senior persons can become friends to our children or grandchildren. Be willing to spend time with them and be their listener. Have fun times with them. Be a mentor. Do not think of retiring from service but build yourself up for it. Conclusion The sunset years can be years of great ministry. Serve the church with your availability. It does not matter how small the job is, only be willing. We have a Senior Ministry in Bedok Methodist Church which organises many activities for seniors. Join these activities and keep yourself active. Be willing to share your skills on some activity or hobby with others. Do not dread your old age - the best is yet to come. Prayer Response Dear Lord, thank you that I can look forward to my “sunset years” with a joyful heart. Help me lead an active life and be willing to continue ministering to those around me. Amen.
