For the Week 10th January 2005
Being
a house of prayer
Scriptural Text: Matthew
21:12-16
Jesus
said, “My house will be called a house of prayer.” Matthew 21:13
Every
start of the year brings with it new hope and resolve to make it better
and more meaningful than the last. May 2005 be a year where we strengthen
the foundation of our prayer life. This week’s devotional is the beginning
of a series on prayer.
Many
have expressed the difficulty to pray. Upon closer examination, I observe
four obstacles which can prevent us from getting up close and personal
with God:
Unyielded
lives
Prayer becomes a chore when we do not totally surrender our lives to
the Lord. Our personal agenda gets in the way. Denial of self will bring
about delight and discipline in prayer.
Unsound
theology
Unbelief stems from an ignorance or misconception of God, for instance,
some may view God as a distant deity or fierce judge of men. We need
to know God completely and truthfully before we can come before Him
in the true spirit of prayer.
Unconfessed
sin
Harbouring sin and wrong motives places the soul in great discomfort,
such that the things of God are not enjoyable. So let us flee from SIN
and turn to the SON of God. Sin will keep us from prayer; but prayer
can keep us away from sin.
Untutored
spirit
When it comes to prayers that matter, it is not about the availability
of time nor is it the lack of spiritual resources – it boils down to
the disposition of our souls. Is our spirit tutored by the faith and
discipline to engage in the consistent posture of prayer? Corrie Ten
Boom once said, “Is prayer your spare tyre or your steering wheel?”
Our
Response
Let’s just do it. Let’s pray: “Dearest Heavenly Father, as Your child,
help me this day to remove all the obstacles that come in the way of
prayer. Help me to delight in conversation, to engage in intercession,
to persist in prayer with You so that I may discover so much more of
the beauty of knowing You and living in Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
