Fear of the Lord
Scriptural Text:
Deut 6: 1-12
Key Verses
These are the commands, decrees and
laws the Lord your God directed me to
teach you to observe in the land that
you are crossing the Jordan to possess
so that you, your children and their
children after them may fear the Lord
your God as long as you live by
keeping all the decrees and commands
that I give you, and so that you may
enjoy long life. (Deut 6: 1-2)
Love the Lord your God with all your
heart and with all your soul and with
all your strength (Deut 6: 5)
But just as He who called you is holy,
so be holy in all you do, for it is
written “Be holy because I am holy” (1
Peter 1: 15 – 16)
The Fear of the
Lord
What makes people come to church? One
of the reasons is the transformed life
of the people. We see in John 4 that
Jesus met with a Samaritan woman who
was treated as an outcast by her
society. Jesus reached out to her and
showed love and care towards her and
her life was transformed. With her
changed life, she brought others to
Christ. Likewise, when we seek revival
in our churches, we must have our
hearts prepared. We must have the fear
of God in our hearts – that is, we
must have an affectionate reverence
towards God. He must be the Master and
Governor of our hearts. God’s love is
sweet but His wrath is bitter. The
blessings that God have given us can
become a curse if we are not careful,
that is when we forget who our giver
is. We must love God with our heart,
our soul and our strength. We must put
our heart right before God. In Acts 1
to 4, we see a revival and the power
of God as many people accepted Christ.
In Acts 5 (about six months later) we
see God’s judgment among the people
and there was great fear among them.
This is because our God is a holy God
and he demands holiness
From 1 Peter 1: 15-16, we are
admonished to conduct ourselves in the
fear of the Lord if we are to seek
revival in our churches.
Application
Do we love the Lord with all our
heart, soul and strength?
Do we have a fear of the Lord in our
hearts?
Is God our master and governor of our
lives and have we surrendered our all
to Him?
Prayer Response
Dear Lord Jesus, I love you and want
to yield myself to you. Teach me to
fear you and respond in a positive
way. Help me to put my heart right
before you and forgive me for all my
unrighteousness. Amen
